2013′s Great online Shopping festival website is live at gosf.in. This year it will be held from Dec 11 till 13th. This year’s website has the option of Hindi language as well. Airtel, Intel & paytm are the 3 preferred partners for the 2013 GOSF. For 2013, the list of retailers participating is huge & have been listed alphabetically in the website.
Most of the companies which have an online presence are participating in the GOSF. From Airtel, airasia to Zovi, you can find all the online retailers in the list. Clicking on the website link will take you to their GOSF customized page. This online shopping festival is emerging as Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals of US.
Google India’s latest ad titled “Google Search: Reunion” has sparked a great deal of conversation on social media & other media outlets. This is based on the partition of India & Pakistan where 2 friends meet after a long time thanks to Google search. Advertisements based on India/Pakistan partition evokes emotional response & many brands are using this theme for their ads. Coco-Cola had an advt featuring vending machines where people from 2 countries can meet online.
Google has a high search market share in India & still has gone created this lengthy advt. With users shifting towards mobile search & apps, Google wants to capture this shift towards search. In the advt, search starts from Desktop search & moves on to mobile search.
The Web Index is a measure of the world wide web’s contribution to development and human rights globally. It is designed & produced by the World Wide Web Foundation. The index measures & ranks Universal Access, Freedom and Openness, Relevant Content & Empowerment. The index was released in 2012 & in 2013 has been expanded to include 20 new countries. Both secondary data a& new primary data has been used to build the index.
It is not just how many internet users a country has, the penetration index, broadband speed & others which are important but also how the web impacts social, developmental, economic and political dimensions as well. This can be utilized by the NGO’s, Govt, think tanks & others to how to better use the web for overall development.
India has been ranked 56 out of 81 countries in the annual Web Index. Sweden, Norway, UK & USA are in the top 4 positions.
Helping Women Get Online(hwgo.com) is an initiative by Google in India to empower women by enabling them to use the internet. In India, only 30% of the active Internet users are women. By bringing more women online, it would empower them & also improves society. Google’s Plan is to have 50 million additional women get online by end of 2014. Intel, HUL, Future Group & Axis Bank are the other partners in this effort who will help drive this initiative through various efforts. Some of the other partners in this effort are Johnson & Johnson, indiatimes, Healthkart & Babyoye.
An Internet Toll Free Helpline number has also been set up at 1800 41 999 77 to guide women if they get stuck on the Internet.The site has information on all the basics like internet skills, chat/email & videos online. Cooking tips, Financial tips & Household tips are also available on the site. The site is also available in Hindi.
Dhoom:3 The Game, which was first released on Windows app store, has now been introduced on Google Play, Apple itunes & BlackBerry App stores. Aamir Khan & Katrina Kaif unveiled the game at an event in Mumbai. The 3D game has been set in Chicago & the movie is slated for release in December. Games based on movies have been introduced in the recent times to provide visibility & drive marketing activities for the movie. Chennai express & Anil kapoor’s 24 are some of the other movie & TV programs which have a dedicated mobile games. The number of Internet users in India has reached 205 million in October this year with a 40% YOY growth. Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International have released I-Cube 2013 report on the Internet users in India. China currently has 300 million internet users while US comes at 2nd with 207 Million users. It is also expected that by June 2014 Internet users in India will be 243 million becoming the top 2nd country in the world.
This huge user base will help develop & grow the internet economy. Online shopping has become popular in India with a large number of shopping portals. 137 million urban users & 68 million rural users. With 110 million mobile internet users in October, and is estimated to reach 130 million by the end of December. More than 50% of urban internet users access internet daily & the demography includes youth, working men, older men & non-working women. Urban centers like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai & other metros have a huge internet user base.
Radiant Info Systems Ltd, the Bangalore based IT company, in partnership with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) has developed Busindia.com. It is the same IT company which developed India’s first online bus ticket reservation system in 2006 for Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). Karnataka, Punjab, Orissa, TN, UP & other RTC’s have been included in the website now for reservation. Anyone from across the world planning a bus trip in India can seamlessly book tickets across India using the site. Other RTC’s will be included in future for booking tickets. This makes it the largest such portal in the world.
Already bus booking portals like redbus.in, travelyaari.com & others are in the market place for online ticketing. India, with a huge road network & diverse nature, would provide a great opportunity for such portals to grow.
ISRO has launched a page on Facebook to provide updates on its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) to the public. This is India’s foray into interplanetary missions and space exploration program. The onus of this MOM is on PSLV. This facebook page provides a forum for public to provide their feedbacks/comments/suggestions.
The page will be regularly updated during the MOM journey & observations for 6 months from Sep’14. Details will also be accessible through ISRO’s official webpage. The FB page has got 205K likes with 171K talking about it.
